About Handmaid's Tale:
The Handmaid's Tale is an American dystopian tragedy television series created by Bruce Miller, based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The series was ordered by the streaming service Hulu as a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes, for which production began in late 2016. The plot features a dystopia following a Second American Civil War wherein a totalitarian society subjects fertile women, called "Handmaids", to child-bearing slavery.
The first three episodes of the series premiered on April 26, 2017; the subsequent seven episodes were released every Wednesday. In May 2017, the series was renewed for a second season; which premiered on April 25, 2018. In May 2018, Hulu renewed the series for a third season, which premiered on June 5, 2019. In July 2019, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which is scheduled to premiere in 2021. In September 2019, it was announced that Hulu and MGM were developing a sequel series, to be based on Atwood's 2019 novel The Testaments.
The Handmaid's Tale's first season won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. It is the first show produced by Hulu to win a major award as well as the first series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama. Elisabeth Moss was also awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress.
Season 4 of The Handmaid's Tale is premiering in 2021. Originally, the new season was scheduled to premiere in fall 2020, but production came to a halt in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Six months later, in September, production resumed in Toronto. This time around, viewers can expect 10 episodes instead of the usual 13, one of which will be directed by actress Elisabeth Moss (June Osborne).
According to showrunner Bruce Miller, the decision “was 100% creative,” allowing the show to focus on a smaller part of the story instead of multiple story arcs.
"Some storylines just seem to shake out as a 10-episode story, in my eyes,” he told IndieWire. “It gives us a little more freedom because you can rely more on one propulsive element."
The teaser for season 4 shows the last time we saw June and hints at what's to come. "I can't rest. My daughter deserves better. We all deserve better. Change never comes easy," June says in it. "This war isn't going to win itself. We're just getting started."
Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale will feature the show’s regulars - Elisabeth, Max Minghella (Commander Nick Blaine), Bradley Whitford (Commander Joseph Lawrence), Joseph Fiennes (Commander Fred Waterford), Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy Waterford), Alexis Bledel (Dr. Emily Malek Ph.D.), Samira Wiley (Moira), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), O-T Fagbenle (Luke Bankole), Madeline Brewer (Janine), and Amanda Brugel (Rita).
In addition, Sam Jaeger who portrayed American representative Mark Tuello throughout season 2 and 3 was added to the main cast for the latest installment. Viewers will also spot a new face from Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House. Actress Mckenna Grace will play Mrs. Keyes, described as “a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence.” The new character will show duality with a “calm and pious” exterior but actually suffers “with turmoil” and “insanity” internally.

I rewatched the series before season 4 came out and I couldn't stop crying. Maybe it's the oppressive times we live in now. Or myself I have PTSD from all the real life trauma I have seen on TV news over the past few years but it got me thinking that I just might need some help.

  • Nope I noticed them all I noticed and see everything but the point is not to tell everyone like how Elisabeth Moss is a Scientologist that refers to people as being suppressive if they don't join their Club. I don't care if it's a cult or religion all religion sucks I'm not hating on any but all because it's controlling and you don't need to go through anyone to get to your higher power and that's a personal decision. Point Blank! And number two now I see why Elisabeth Moss who I first saw in Girl Interrupted with my favorite actor at the time and still today one of the great greats Winona Ryder along with Jolie Lizzie Moss played Polly AKA torch Clark the little burn victim and I've seen her in some other movies but this one she insisted on playing I saw an interview where she said she would be jealous if there was someone else playing it because she does the part so well which would make sense if she's a Scientologist because of anything Remini says is true and others like Nicole Kidman and their kids being not able to contact them because they're SP's and whatever else they do to them in there sounds a little controlling much like Gilead in a way. So it would make sense that Lizzie Moss does so well in this film almost a little bit to Natural not only acting but directing. Definitely something a little more bit behind it maybe just a wee wittle aye👌 haaa! So here we are loving Lizzie Moss being some type of hero in the film as June Osborne playing the part so exceptionally well so perhaps Scientology groomed her for this type of vile world? I don't belong to anything but myself and I don't judge others. So hopefully if Scientology is as suppressive as what has come out about it perhaps Lizzie like June Osborne is trying to take them down so she's working her way up in the Scientology ladder👊😎. Any religion company Cult person etc..that called anyone family member a suppressive person has got to go. And perhaps I'm the fool🤣🤣🤣 ps I only edited my commentary here because I am an English major and misspelled some words because I'm a grammar junkie for spelling😘

  • If you read The Testaments, Atwood's sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, you can see that Lydia is NOT a sadist, she was abused and trafficked like every woman in Gilead.

    Amanda McVicarAmanda McVicarHónapja
    • Hadn't read The Testaments yet… on my list. But I knew Aunt Lydia was not a sadist. She's got anger issues, for sure, stemming from her own oppression. Takes a guy to label a woman with something negative… that way he avoids discussing her humanity.

    • Religion can be used as a tool of control for the weak minded by the manipulative. Not saying that all religious people are this way. But it's easy to sway the majority with something they fear and truly believe in. Suicide bombers are usually super religious. Slave owners were "religious" as well while beating and raping their slaves. Morality and religion don't always go hand and hand

      Bee V504Bee V50416 napja
    • History says otherwise. Plenty of atrocities in "gods name. You can argue not real Christians but they would say the same about you, not a real Christian. I'm no bible scholar nor religious, so personally I have little input on what a real Christian is. I'm certainly not saying all or even most would partake in these acts. Religion is often used to gain support for horrible things though. So it really doesn't matter if you consider them real Christians. Nothing in the book is unrealistic as historically everything has happened in some form throughout the world.

  • There's a drawing of a woman & child to the left of the door in Serena's bedroom or the nursery; it was drawn by Kathy Kollwitz (? I think that's her last name, & she was German ?). She's famous for her drawings of women & children together - with simple sweeps of charcoal, she expresses the intimacy between woman & child, mother & child, grandmother & child - she offers a vision of what life is from that point of view. Beautiful choice, but twisted, too, as Serena let her desire for a child warp her so much that she stopped caring about ANYTHING else. Maybe she never did...

  • Atwood said that every aspect of Gilead was something that existed in reality at one time or another. Her biggest influences were the Iranian revolution, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union. You can really see that come through in the show too. The female citizens being forced to dress modestly and having no voting rights (Iranian revolution), the Aunts look very similar to "brown shirts"/Sturmabteilung as well as the hatred for Judaism and Catholicism which was prevalent in Nazi Germany, and the "colonies" share many similarities to the gulags/forced labor camps of communist countries/the Soviet Union. That's why there's long been a debate if Atwood's novel is a critique on fascism, communism, white supremacy, etc. Honestly, I see it as a critique on authoritarianism, regardless of politics. Radical regimes never end well, regardless if it's left or right.

Well it would be easier to ‘gram them by the p*ssy’ in gilead, wouldn’t it?!

  • I watched season 3 recently. The military state is eerily prescient here in Washington DC right now. I met some friends for dinner last night and saw several groups of off duty Guardsmen walking around. It's chilling. The show is awesome. I get that it's fiction. But I don't really think things can go down so far so fast. Incrementalism is how we're being subdued. With brief moments of brutal repression. Like the crack down on the occupy movement. I noticed almost all of the visual easter eggs. The Oprah voice over got past me. It's not very credible that June has not ended up on the wall. Even as a fertile woman in this fictional universe she would have been hung a long time ago. That being said I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Moss. The aftermath of the airport exodus is a stretch. I mean how was the perimeter of the airport not swarming with Gilead state security after the escape? I thought I was watching the series finale. It has almost reached "jumped the shark" moments. I hope the writing stays strong and they don't make the characters or story telling decisions too illogical. Maybe I'm just nit picking. But I'll be tuning in. Fight the power!

    • True, the boundaries have been pushed back relatively slowly in US, enabling further and further encroachment into some really dangerous areas (for anyone who’s studied the rise of fascism, the parallels are here) . I think it’s more like there’s a tipping point at which momentum shifts and then there’s swift changes. Observe how quickly things deteriorated in Syria, for example. Interviewers asked refugees why didn’t they leave sooner, but they just never imagined it would get so bad so fast until it was too late. Sadly, I think it absolutely can happen here, or anywhere, when conditions are ripe.

  • I was here to find out about the sign in the thumbnail. Why are there religious symbols of so many religions on that board? I thought following any religion other than Christianity is not allowed in Gilead. When I first saw that sign board outside the church in an episode I tried to find information about it, but nothing was available.

    AnyaAnya3 hónapja
    • @Miranda Lyle and on that note, you’ll see the the triangle is also the sign for homosexuality, showing that it is forbidden. I think that’s the same symbol the nazis used tbh

      Hillary RoosHillary Roos3 hónapja
    • The symbol at the top is most likely that of the one and only true (and allowed) religion in Gilead: "Blessed be the fruit - May the Lord open". It looks like all the other symbols are crossed out with a faint red line, meaning they are forbidden.

    • They add to the ambiance of "this actually COULD happen", and takes parallels from history, like Commanders raiding museums for art and keeping it in their houses like the Nazi's did to the Louvre and other museums of occupied Europe in's meant to make it real enough to be spookily possible. Atwood herself said she'd never invent a horror for either book, only include ones that have precedent in the history of man somewhere in the World, there's enough atrocities across history to choose from, that's for sure...

  • The attention to detail created a sense of horror I've never felt in any other dramatic series. The Handmaid's Tale is terrifying because it so easily come true here in the West, in the same way freedom for women and men in Iran was destroyed by conservative Islamic theology coupled with an old man's fear of the female.

    • @Kris Aaron no prob since flying is against the left ideas of green, except of course, for those in power as we are already witnessing. The intolerance is coming only from the left and common sense from the right. You are losing your rights as we ramble on here but you think only with emotion and omit the facts and make up facts to make your viewpoint beginning with your false description of the male above. Grow up some and develop your own views based on facts.

    • If a far right group were to accomplish something like this, it would be in response to the far left taking things too far. I think this almost each time I watch the series. The pendulum also swings with the same degree based in the force administered. That’s why we all, on all sides, must keep these groups in check.

    • I think she was making fun of the channel saying that Aunt Lydia being a sadist was a detail that people somehow missed - even though it seems more obvious that she is acting out of a much deeper place than sadism. lol. It seemingly swooshed right over your heads.

    • They'd just captured Chicago a couple episodes before that, as a well-known & respected Talk Show Host and Media Personality, who was female and African-American (though the Hulu Series isn't anywhere NEAR the levels of racism that's in the Books), she knew she was in danger, and she jumped ship to Canada, and started working for Radio Free America, naturally...that's how I think it'd work to get her on air for June to hear her in that car.
